Zahra Hakim’s work builds a bridge between memory, displacement, and the ethereal landscape of dreams. Born in Iran as an Iraqi migrant in a world shaped by the echoes of conflict and migration, her personal experiences have deeply infused her artistic practice with a profound sense of empathy, attentiveness, mutual care, and collective healing.

Her artistic journey began as a way to explore the complex relationship between memory and imagination, having grown up among diverse cultures (India, Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, Syria) and narratives shaped by migration and the promise of new beginnings. Drawing from her own experiences of both voluntary and involuntary displacement, she explores themes of belonging, identity, and the fragility of human connection, while also reflecting on the imperative to leave behind a better world for future generations.

At the heart of Zahra Hakim’s artistic vision lies a deep fascination with the world of dreams. Understood both as a practice and as a way of thinking about one’s relationship to the world, dreams manifest in her work as spaces where reality and imagination intersect. Her practice blurs the boundaries between the tangible and the intangible, using mediums such as performance, sculpture, and ready-mades to create immersive environments that transport viewers into a realm where the laws of the subconscious guide the actions and gestures of the protagonists. The theme of care—both for oneself and for others—occupies a central place in her work, acting as a source of hope and resistance. In her practice, the act of creation becomes a catalyst for collective healing, a space where empathy can flourish. The artist often invites viewers to gather, share their experiences, and find comfort in the shared human condition that unites them.

The installation conceived for the Kunsthalle Marcel Duchamp is inspired by a dream of resilience that left a lasting impression on the artist due to its evocative power. Alone in the middle of the ocean, carrying only a kilim backpack, she is invited to dive—even though she cannot swim. In the depths, she finds the basement of her childhood home and her mother teaching her the alphabet. From this foundational dream, where trust is the only option, Zahra Hakim extracts essential elements that allow her to grasp the meaning of this immersion into the depths of childhood—an experience that led her to claim her status as an artist. On the upper level, a mirrored surface bordered with dry earth symbolizes the impossibility of finding answers on the surface of the water. On the lower level, candies evoke a rediscovered childhood and the space where she first learned language. The installation underscores the power of the dream that has guided the artist on her path to creation as much as on her path to resilience. Julie Enckell

Born in 1983 in Iran to Iraqi parents, Zahrasadat Hakim is a visual artist who earned her Master’s degree from HEAD – Geneva in 2022. Her work has been shown in various institutions, including Nitja Centre for Contemporary Art (Norway), La Rada (Locarno), and Monnaie de Paris (France), among others. In 2023, she received the Inspire Art Award in Oslo, Norway, where she also undertook a residency. In 2024, she joined the main residency program at La Becque (Switzerland), and in 2025 she will take part in the Unlimited Residency in New York. That same year, she was awarded the 2024 Art & Humanity Prize, which led to a residency at the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum. She is also a 2025 Swiss Art Awards laureate in the Art category.

Le travail de Zahra Hakim fait le pont entre les domaines de la mémoire, du déplacement et du paysage éthéré des rêves. Née en Iran en tant que migrante irakienne dans un monde façonné par les échos des conflits et des migrations, ses expériences personnelles ont imprégné sa pratique artistique d’un sens profond de l’empathie, de l’attention, du mutualisme et de la guérison collective.

Le parcours artistique de Zahra Hakim a commencé comme un moyen d’explorer la relation complexe entre la mémoire et l’imagination, car elle a grandi au milieu de différentes cultures (Inde, Iran, Irak, Liban, Syrie) et de récits tissés par la migration et les promesses d’un nouveau départ. S’inspirant de ses propres expériences de déplacements volontaires et involontaires, elle explore les thèmes de l’appartenance, de l’identité et de la fragilité des liens humains, mais aussi la nécessité de laisser un monde meilleur aux générations futures.

Au cœur de la vision artistique de Zahra Hakim se trouve une profonde fascination pour le monde des rêves. Appréhendés à la fois comme une pratique et comme la possibilité de penser son rapport au monde, les rêves s’incarnent dans le travail artistique par des espaces où la réalité et l’imagination se croisent. La pratique de l’artiste brouille ainsi les frontières entre le tangible et l’intangible en utilisant des médiums tels que la performance, la sculpture et les ready-mades, pour créer des environnements immersifs qui transportent le public dans un lieu où les lois du subconscient guident les faits et les gestes des protagonistes. Le thème du soin, tant pour soi-même que pour les autres occupe ici une place centrale en tant que source d’espoir et de résistance. Dans la pratique, l’acte de création devient le catalyseur d’une guérison collectifs, un lieu où l’empathie prend place, l’artiste invitant souvent les spectateur-ices à se réunir, à partager leur vécu et à trouver du réconfort dans l’expérience humaine commune qui les unit.

L’installation conçue pour la Kunsthalle Marcel Duchamp s’inspire d’un rêve de résilience qui a marqué l’artiste par sa puissance d’évocation. Seule au milieu de l’océan et munie d’un unique sac à dos en kilim, elle est invitée à plonger alors qu’elle ne sait pas nager. Dans les profondeurs, l’artiste retrouve le sous-sol de la maison de son enfance et sa mère qui lui apprend l’alphabet. De ce rêve fondateur où l’artiste n’a d’autre choix que de faire confiance, Zahra Hakim extrait les éléments essentiels offrant de mesurer le sens de cette immersion dans les profondeurs de l’enfance qui la mènera à trouver son statut d’artiste : au niveau supérieur, la surface en miroir bordée de terre sèche indique l’impossibilité de trouver des réponses à la surface de l’eau. Au niveau inférieur, les bonbons renvoient à l’enfance retrouvée et à cet espace où l’artiste a appris le langage. L’installation souligne ici la puissance du rêve ayant guidé l’artiste sur le chemin de la création autant que sur celui de la résilience. Julie Enckell
